About this role

The Perinatal Mental Health Clinician serves as a senior member of the multidisciplinary Perinatal Mental Health Team within Adult Community Mental Health Services. This role delivers expert mental health care, including assertive case management, triage, holistic physical and mental health assessments, clinical risk management, and crisis intervention in community settings for perinatal needs. It focuses on women, infants, and families with moderate to severe perinatal mental health disorders.

Daily responsibilities include providing specialist mental health assessments and clinical management to promote positive maternal mental health and enhance parent-infant relationships. The clinician works according to shared care principles, facilitating access to specialist services and engagement with internal and external agencies. This involves comprehensive support within the North West Perinatal Community Mental Health Service.

The team operates as a specialised service offering targeted care in the community for those with perinatal mental health needs. As part of a Tasmanian multidisciplinary perinatal mental health team, the clinician collaborates across regions to address risks and disorders effectively. This environment emphasises holistic approaches to mental and physical health.

The role includes taking a lead in developing and implementing system changes and service improvements within the Perinatal Mental Health Service. Opportunities exist for professional development, accelerated pathways, and contributions to service enhancements. Fixed-term position supports ongoing impact through a 12-month vacancy pool.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience within Mental Health Services, with a demonstrated understanding of Perinatal and Infant Mental Health clinical practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience of the range of psychiatric disorders which may occur in the perinatal period, and appropriate treatments
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the various factors, both antenatal and postnatal, which may affect an infant’s emotional, social, cognitive and behavioural development
  • Ability to provide expert mental health care including assertive case management and crisis intervention for perinatal needs
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams within community mental health settings

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing specialist care to women, infants and their families identified as at risk of, or having, moderate to severe perinatal mental health disorders
  • Provide specialist mental health assessment and clinical management to women in the perinatal period to promote positive maternal mental health and enhance the parent-infant relationship
  • Work in accordance with shared care principles and within a multidisciplinary treatment team to assist women’s access to specialist services and enhance engagement with agencies
  • Take a lead role in the development and implementation of system changes and service improvements in the Perinatal Mental Health Service
  • Deliver assertive case management, triage, holistic physical and mental health assessment, clinical risk management and crisis intervention in community settings
