The Lactation Consultant Nurse provides specialized lactation support and direct nursing care in the NICU.

The nurse practices as a professional registered nurse using the nursing process as the foundation for care delivery. Training, competency validation, and ongoing performance evaluation ensure safe, evidence-based practice overseen by the department’s Nurse Leader. Care focuses on infants requiring specialized support.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Nursery deliver high-quality, family-centered care. Families are essential partners, participating in decision-making from admission through discharge. An interdisciplinary team approach guides all aspects with a collaborative, respectful culture grounded in open communication.

The unit offers strong educational programs and professional development opportunities. Staff enjoy consistently high retention and participate in quality improvement activities. Continued growth is supported in conjunction with unit-based educators or clinical nurse specialists.

Requirements

Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
License Registered Nurse required
American Heart Association – Basic Life Support Certificate required
IBCLC Certified
0-1 years related work experience required
Basic familiarity with computers and ability to navigate web-based applications

Responsibilities

Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience in decision making for patient care
Coordinate care of patients and direct assistive personnel to provide safe, effective, efficient, equitable, and timely patient-centered care
Demonstrate commitment to patients, staff, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with responsibility for own practice and patient safety
Work collegially with health professionals to determine healthcare needs and act as patient advocate
Maintain annual mandatory education requirements including emergency skills and unit competencies
Provide specialized lactation support to infants and families in the NICU setting
Develop relationships with patients and families that maintain trust and respect through effective communication
